Annette Funicello - The Best Of Annette Vinyl LP Review
67
Here it is!
If there is One Celebrity truly worthy of being a role model to young girls, it is Annette Funicello. She went from Mouseketeer on the Mickey Mouse Club to Singer, actress, Skippy Peanut Butter saleswoman to selling Dolls, All this without a scandal to tarnish her reputation as Our "Pineapple Princess". Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus should have took notes.
Here is another record I added to my collection recently.
The Best Of Annette 1984 Rhino Records RNDF 206
In 1984, Rhino Records released this compilation of 15 songs put together by the Famous L.A. DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, Mayor Of The Sunset Strip.
Here is what you get (It's worth noting that there is a CD with the same name that has a different lineup of songs that I don't think Rodney was involved with)
Side 1:
1. Tall Paul
2. Dreamin' About You
3. First Name Initial
4. Indian Giver
5. O Dio Mio
6. Pajama Party
7. Jamaican Ska (This LP was released 2 years before the Back To The Beach soundtrack which has her version with backing from Fishbone )
Side 2:
1. The Monkey's Uncle (a duet with the Beach Boys that will really get the party started right)
2. California Sun
3. Beach Party
4. Pineapple Princess #2
5. Muscle Beach Party
6. I Dream Of Frankie
7. Bikini Beach
8. Swingin' & Surfin'
A FAB-Olous set of tunes on this vinyl. This does not include what I think is her biggest hit " How Will I Know My Love " and is missing my favorite song of hers, " All my Loving " Annette's now rare, rocking Beatles cover. The songs that are here provide about 35 minutes worth of Pop, Bubblegum, Surf Rock, Ballads, Rockabilly and Punk.
Yes, I consider Annette one of the first Punk Rockers, Listening to the "Annette Sound", it's easy to see the influence she had on the Late 70s - early 80s scene as Mr. Bingenheimer writes on the album's back cover. Also on the back cover is his Interview with Miss Funicello discussing her career. It is brought up that she was working on a new movie with Frankie entitled " The Last Beach Party Movie ", This must have been a working title for "Back To The Beach".
On a final note, Thank You to Giddle Partridge & Rodney for taking the time to read this hub and leaving a comment answering the questions I had about finding the Cover of "Tall Paul" by Unit 3 with Venus and "Annette's Got The Hits" by Red Kross,

where tobuy this record
55 here and loved annette then and now
I grew up watching The Mickey Mouse Club, and Annette was my favorite, and I followed her career til the end. Even following her career, I've learned more from your hub than I did during her years in the spotlight, thanks for giving us more insight into her life.
Bring on more Annette. She was the favorite of every little good girl of the 50's and 60's myself included. They say Walt Disney was mad about her for some reason. Curly black hair, a bit on the chubby side, marginally talented and still a star. Way to go girl.
i thought she was dead - glad she is still holding on.
skippy ain't the same as it was before
Rodney on the roq still plays Annette on KROQ. I will have to see if he has a copy of this record still.

HI,
I'M RODNEY BINGENHEIMER'S PUBLICIST! AND I HAVE HIM ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW!!! AND WE ARE ANSWERING HIS FAN MAIL, HE WANTED TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS PERSONALLY (VIA ME, SINCE HE DOESN'T HAVE THE INTERNET).
OK! FIRST ANSWER IS: "ANNETTES GOT THE HITS" IS PUT OUT ON POSHBOY RECORDS WHICH IS AN E.P. OF REDD KROSS ON VINYL AND C.D., AND IT IS ALSO ON THE "RODNEY ON THE ROQ- COMPILATION ALBUM", WHICH THERE ARE 3 OF, RODNEY JUST RELEASED IT (THE ONE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR) ON iTUNES UNDER "RODNEY ON THE ROQ"!!!!!! AS FOR THE SECOND QUESTION, "TALL PAUL" WAS NEVER RELEASED, AND WAS ONLY A DEMO, THAT OF COURSE RODNEY IS PROBABLY THE ONLY PERSON WHO OWNS IT BESIDES VENUS, WHO COVERED IT, WHO RODNEY RAN INTO ON NEW YEARS EVE 2010 AND SHE IS NOW 36!!! ALSO EVERYONE OUT THERE STILL TUNE INTO "RODNEY ON THE ROQ" EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY MORNING @ 12 MIDNIGHT PCST-3 AM, EVERY WEEK TO HEAR THE BEST AND NEWEST GROUND BREAKING MUSIC ON, THE WORLD FAMOUS KROQ 106.7 F.M.!!!! P.S. SADLY ANNETTE IS DOING VERY POORLY, RODNEY WANTS EVERYONE TO PRAY FOR HER, THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS... WE LOVE YOU ANNETTE!XO
Good thing you let me know this is not the same as the CD. I was about to order it.
All My Loving is my favorite Beatles tune. It is now my life's mission to find that song.
Good review!
I have always loved Annette. Her biggest hits were: "Tall Paul" (#7); "O Dio Mio" (#10); "Pineapple Princess" (#11); "First name Initial" (#17); "Train of Love" (#36); "Lonely Guitar" (#50) and "How will I know my Love" (#55). Many of her singles which were'nt hits in their day have since become cult favorites like "The Monkey's Uncle"; "Dreamin' about you"; and "Teenage Wedding". Annette was always number one in my book.
Oh MAN, I was in love with annette back in the day! This brings back the memories.
Everyone remember to keep Annette or anyone you know with MS In your prayers!
Who couldn't LOVE Annette? I remember when "Beach Blanket Bingo" would play on a Saturday and we would sit in front of the tube. That was true entertainment. I miss those days so much, and have prayed for Annette many times since I heard about her illness. I would love to see her on screen again, in a new movie.

Annette was quite the babe in her day, no doubt!
