Walt Disney Presents Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland in 3-d - A Review
67
If the rumors are true that Michael Jackson was Tim Burton's first choice to play Edward Scissorhands, I often wonder how that would have turned out. Would the team-up proved fruitful the way Burton & Depp have? Would we have gotten MJ as Ed Wood, Ichabod Crane, Victor Van Dort, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd or The Mad Hatter? As much as I like Michael, No one could have played it like Johnny.
I should issue a disclaimer before you continue reading on: Tim Burton is my favorite director and as such, I find myself unable to look at his works objectively. Love all his films. I will even admit to being the one person that liked his Planet Of The Apes 're-imagining'... which is probably the point where everyone will quit reading this.
If you are still reading... Yes, I did enjoy Alice In Wonderland. Maybe for the aforementioned reason... or, Could be the contact high I got from whatever the caterpillar kept smoking.
Mia Wasikowska is believable as Alice, a rebellious 19 year old lass about to be proposed to by Hamish (Leo Bill), a young man who likes to blow his nose into his handkerchief and then look at the results, I don't blame Alice for being distracted by the white rabbit agan and running off after him. So she falls down the hole and finds herself in "Underland". (Where the 3-d aspect really pays off) she is reunited with the old gang. Alice is told she is to be the one to slay the Jabberwocky (voiced by Christopher Lee) and end the rule of the evil Red Queen (A Delightfully evil Helena Bonham-Carter).
Tim Burton fills the cast out with a list of talented performers as he does in all his films. Johnny Depp is wonderful as always as The Mad Hatter. It's never a dissapointment watching him. Crispin Glover has always been one of my favorite actors. Why has it took this long for him to appear in a Burton movie? Anne Hathaway is obviously having fun with her role as the White Queen. some other highlights: the talented Stephen Fry as the diabolical Cheshire Cat. Alan Rickman as the voice of the hookah smoking caterpillar, Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I think the audience favorite is going to be the Dormouse voiced by Barbara Windsor.
Some reviews I have read keep comparing this to the Narnia films and Lord Of The Rings but I felt it is more closer to The Neverending Story, Labyrinth & The Dark Crystal, There you have it: Tim Burton made an old-school 80s fantasy flick!

Nice review, bat115. Was just looking at the trailer for this yesterday. Depp in another Burton film, looks like a winner.
It was a 2 hour Hot Topic ad...
But I knew that going in. I think Burton is best when he doing his own material so he is not beholden to any preconceived notions he or studios or anyone else has.
He has a fantastic visual style. I loved the architecture in this film but over all it was a bad sequel to a story that did not need or warrant a sequel. This is not Lord Of The Rings or as my friend said "It's like Pirates of the Caribbean with a rabbit."
@bat115
if i were you, i would simply deny all of christina's comments as they're highly offensive, and i would report her to hubpages immediately. i'm not telling you what you should do, but just wanted to offer friendly advice. besides, you shouldn't allow offensive remarks like hers to ruin your hub like this.
@christina barrett
Excuse me? Do I know you? Did I say anything that offended you in the freaking forums or something? I don't think so, because I know i would've remembered someone as offensive as you. to answer your question im not black, nor am i gay. exactly what the hell made you ask me that? as for reading through my articles on hubpages, i can assure you i've written EVERY hub i've published myself. none of it was ever plagarized, so i kindly ask if you keep that remark to yourself.
as far as reading what my hubs, i never asked you to. nor do i ask anyone to. if you like what i write, then hey i'm always happy to have new fans. however, if you don't, then please keep your mouth shut if all your going to say to me is racial slurs and questions of my sexuality. i've done nothing to you my good woman, so what gives you the right to talk to me in such a way? plus, what are you talking about with this equal rights talk? i never had a hub on that topic nor have i participated in that topic debate on forums either. therefore, i don't even know what your talking about. look, your lucky i'm in a pretty good mood right now, otherwise i'd report you to hubpages for your language towards me. however, since it's my birthday, and i happen to be in a good mood, I'll ignore what you just said. however, if you ever talk like this about me or to anyone else and i find out, then you will be reported. this isn't a joke christina either, as that's a promise. have a nice day.
MJ as Ed Wood = a sight for certain!!!!!!
I am looking forward to seeing this! 3-D will be the way to go now for movie experiences. I can't even imagine anyone but Depp playing this part. He is perfect for the role. thanks for a great review.
Loved your review! Would love to see a trailer video on your hub! Rated this one up a notch! Awesome work!
I also had a problem watching Tim Burton with an objective eye, as I loved all of his stuff up to Ed Wood (or Nightmare Before Christmas - which he didn't direct - which ever one came later.) After that I just kept telling myself that I liked his stuff, but after Sweeney Todd I knew I was lying to myself. I think he is more of a visual artist than a story teller (in linear terms anyway.) I would like him going back to a partnership like Nightmare Before Christmas, where he is creating the world and the characters, and someone else is telling the story.
As a result, I am afraid to watch Alice in Wonderland.
Good review and a nice personal touch. Don't worry I am a Tim Burton fan too.
Maybe I'll get time to see this on March Break next week. I am like you I am a big fan of Tim Burton. I just like the way his characters are so weird you can't take your eyes off of them and you watch over and over because you visually can't take it all in the first time. Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp never fail to capture the attention either.
Great review I can't wait to see this.
I like your review - Tim Burton has never made one bad movie.
I feel ya on this bein like an 80s flick. good pov.
This movie looks scary as heck
Christopher Lee was the Jabberwocky dragon?
this movie kicks arse
I'll admit it...you said you liked his version of Planet of the Apes and I stopped reading...
Honestly, how ANYONE can find that to be ANYTHING but a contemptible pile of garbage is beyond me...
Terrific "to the point" review bat. Well done. I can't wait to see the movie as I too am a big Burton fan. I had the good fortune of interviewing him for "Nightmare Before Christmas" along with director and puppet master Henry Selick, but really it was Burton's signature style at work in that flick.
agree on glover. that dude is whack.
Great review. I plan on seeing this soon.
very original take on this movie.
The movie shocked me. It was great.
Burton is mad genius.
I like this movie much better than I thought I would!!!!!!!!
luv Tim Burton and his pals. it will be interesting to see an older Alice, and refined special effects. i have been waiting to see this and finally it is coming out on DVD so i see i've got a very important date with RedBox.
:)
Why is everyone so down on this movie? it was great! Getting all butthurt over Burton ruining Planet Of The Apes is just goofy.
i did enjoy the movie, very much :)
i thought i saw you in it, somewhere over by the mushrooms... ;)
You're kidding, right? about the Michael Jackson thing? As for Alice, I've yet to see it. I just can't watch Burton movies anymore after Planet Of The Apes. Ugh!---- can't believe you like that one.

wow,i must say you wrote a great review on this movie. I'm impressed. i too am a huge fan of tim burton's work to be honest, and I was also one of the few that found his interpretation of "Planet of the Apes" great and interesting. Sure, it wasn't as great as Charleton Heston's version, but what remake is ever better than the original anyway? However, I still loved both versions of that film though just as equally.
However, I didn't know tim burton originally wanted michael jackson to play edward scissorhands. that would've been weird if that would've happened, as I can't imagine anyone else who could've pulled off that role as well as Johnny Depp. That's very interesting to know. In fact, it kind of reminds of the time when I was watching E!, when they said George Lucas was originally planning to cast Nick Nolte as Han Solo. Can you imagine how different that franchise would've turned out if Lucas had gotten his original wish. Oh well. lol.
anyway, keep up the great work buddy.
